Arthur 2: On the Rocks

Arthur Bach returns with his fortune intact and his marriage to Linda Marolla still happy, but a vengeful figure from his past changes that. Burt Johnson, the father of the wealthy woman Arthur left at the altar, seizes control of the Bach family business and strips Arthur of his money, leaving him with an ultimatum tied to his marriage. Arthur and Linda, meanwhile, are hoping to adopt a child, and the loss of his wealth puts new strain on their life together. To win back what he lost, Arthur has to sober up, find work, and adjust to a life without the comforts he has always taken for granted.

The film is a sequel to Arthur, continuing the story of the wealthy, heavy-drinking title character. Dudley Moore again plays Arthur, with Liza Minnelli as Linda, John Gielgud as Hobson, Geraldine Fitzgerald as Martha Bach, Stephen Elliott as Burt Johnson, and Paul Benedict as Fairchild; the credited cast runs to 47 names. Bud Yorkin directed, working from a screenplay by Andy Breckman, with Robert Shapiro producing. It was Yorkin's second film as director, following Inspector Clouseau in 1968.

Released in July 1988 by Warner Bros. Pictures, the comedy runs 113 minutes and took in about 15 million dollars worldwide, a modest return for a studio sequel. On IMDb it holds 4.7 out of 10 from roughly 7,100 votes, and on TMDB 5.5 out of 10 from 163 votes, indicating limited enthusiasm from those who have seen it.
