In 1880s New York, a devoted newspaperman named Phineas Mitchell founds his own paper after a dispute with his employer costs him his job. His reputation for integrity draws a backer, and his new publication, The Globe, quickly finds an audience. Its success brings it into conflict with the larger paper he left behind, owned by heiress Charity Hackett, who is prepared to fight for circulation by any means. The rivalry plays out in the city's newspaper district, where an associate's typesetting machine gives The Globe an advantage.

Samuel Fuller directed, wrote and produced the film, the first in the list of his directed features and the one that precedes Pickup on South Street. Gene Evans leads the cast as Phineas Mitchell, with Mary Welch as Charity Hackett, Bela Kovacs as Ottmar Mergenthaler, Herbert Heyes, Tina Pine and George O'Hanlon in supporting roles. The film is a drama with historical and thriller elements, running 83 minutes.
