George and Ursula are raising their young son, George Junior, in the jungle, but Ursula's mother Beatrice is determined to bring her daughter and grandson back to city life. She enlists Lyle Van de Groot, Ursula's former suitor, in a scheme to separate the family, while George's friend Ape has landed in debt at a Las Vegas casino and needs rescuing. George sets out to help Ape and to hold his family together, leaving the jungle vulnerable to a lion with designs on his title as King of the Jungle.
The 2003 sequel was directed by David Grossman from a screenplay by Jordan Moffet, and produced by Gregg Hoffman and Jordan Kerner. Christopher Showerman takes over the title role, with Julie Benz as Ursula, Angus T. Jones as George Jr., Thomas Haden Church as Lyle, Christina Pickles as Beatrice and John Cleese as the voice of Ape. Made for 12 million dollars as a direct-to-video release from Walt Disney Pictures, the film runs 87 minutes and counts 59 credited cast members.
Reception has been weak: on IMDb it holds 3.4 out of 10 from around 8,500 votes, and on TMDB 4.5 out of 10 from roughly 513 votes. A critics' rating of 4.8 out of 10 from six reviews sits slightly above the audience scores, though all three measures point to a similar verdict.
