Agora

Set in Roman Egypt during the late fourth and early fifth centuries, Agora centres on Hypatia, a philosopher, mathematician and astronomer who teaches in Alexandria. As tensions between pagans, Jews and Christians escalate, her student Orestes grows into a political role in the city, while her slave Davus is drawn to the Christian movement, which offers him a chance at freedom. Hypatia's school and the city's intellectual life come under mounting pressure as religious conflict reshapes Alexandria.

Alejandro Amenábar directed and co-wrote the film with Mateo Gil, following The Sea Inside (2004) in his filmography. Rachel Weisz plays Hypatia, with Max Minghella as Davus, Oscar Isaac as Orestes, Michael Lonsdale as Theon and Rupert Evans as Synesius. The production was mounted on a budget of 73 million USD and returned about 39 million USD worldwide, so it did not recoup its cost at the box office. Audiences have been more favourable than critics: on IMDb the rating is 7.1/10 from 76,000 votes and on TMDB 7/10 from 1,614 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 5.8/10 from 95 reviews.
