The Gunman

Jim Terrier is a former military operative who once carried out a killing for foreign mining interests in the Congo, an act that helped plunge the country into turmoil. Years later he is living in Africa, working on a water project and trying to put his past behind him, but the trauma of what he did has not left him. When armed men try to kill him, he sets out to learn who ordered the attack, a search that takes him across Europe and back into contact with people from his old life, including a woman he once loved and the friend she married.

The film is an action crime drama directed by Pierre Morel, his fourth feature after District B13, Taken and From Paris with Love. Sean Penn, who also worked on the screenplay and produced, plays Jim Terrier; the cast includes Jasmine Trinca, Javier Bardem, Ray Winstone, Mark Rylance and Idris Elba. With a budget of about 40 million dollars, it earned roughly 14 million worldwide.

Audience response was modest: it holds a rating of 5.8 on IMDb from around 45,000 votes and the same score on TMDB from about a thousand votes. A critics' rating of 4.3 from 179 reviews places it below those audience scores. It runs 115 minutes and was released in 2015.
