Short description
Jem and the Holograms follows Jerrica Benton, a young woman from a small town whose life changes when a video she records becomes an unexpected online sensation. Her sisters Kimber, Aja and Shana are part of the story from the start, and the four of them set out to build a career in music together as Jem and the Holograms. The group's rise brings attention, opportunities and the pressure that comes with sudden fame, while Jerrica weighs her new public identity against the relationships she already has.
The film is a live-action take on the 1980s animated series of the same name. Jon M. Chu directed it from a screenplay by Ryan Landels, with Brian Goldner, Jason Blum and Chu producing. Aubrey Shea plays Jerrica, also known as Jem, alongside Stefanie Scott, Hayley Kiyoko, Aurora Perrineau, Ryan Guzman and Molly Ringwald. It was the seventh film Chu directed, arriving between Justin Bieber's Believe and Now You See Me 2.
Released in October 2015, the film had a budget of five million dollars and returned about two million at the worldwide box office. Audiences have been harsh: on IMDb it holds 4.2 out of 10 from roughly 8,700 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.5 out of 10 from around 404 votes. Critics' reviews, 77 in total, average 3.9 out of 10, placing the film below even its modest audience scores.
