Burnt Money

Burnt Money is an Argentine-Spanish-Uruguayan crime film set in Buenos Aires in 1965. It centres on Ángel and Nene, two men who meet by chance and become lovers as well as partners in crime, known together as "the twins." Ángel suffers from schizophrenia and hears voices, while Nene is a hardened criminal. Alongside a getaway driver called El Cuervo, the pair carry out a robbery that goes badly wrong: the haul is large, but people are killed and Ángel is wounded. The three flee and hide out, and the pressure of confinement pushes their already fragile relationships toward a breaking point. The screenplay, written by Marcelo Figueras, Ricardo Piglia and Marcelo Piñeyro, draws on a real criminal case that became a notorious episode in Argentine crime history.

Marcelo Piñeyro directed. The film was his first feature in the chronological list of his work, followed by The Method (2005) and La verdadera historia de Ricardo III (2026). The cast is led by Leonardo Sbaraglia as El Nene, Eduardo Noriega as Ángel and Pablo Echarri as El Cuervo, with Leticia Brédice, Ricardo Bartis and Dolores Fonzi in supporting roles. Diana Frey, Óscar Kramer and Gerardo Herrero produced.

Burnt Money was released in 2000 and runs 125 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 7,200 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.7 out of 10 from about 102 votes. A critics' rating of 6.7 out of 10 from 30 reviews places critical and audience assessments closely in line with one another.
