Takumi Fujiwara is a high school student who spends his days at a part-time job and his nights delivering tofu for his father's shop. He drives his father's modified Toyota AE86 Trueno on the mountain roads of Akina, and his precise handling of the car has made him the fastest amateur racer on the downhill course, though he is not aware of it himself. His ordinary routine changes when he unknowingly outdrives Keisuke Takahashi, a leading street racer from the Akagi RedSuns team. Keisuke sets out to find the driver who beat him, and the challenge draws Takumi into the world of nighttime street racing. Teams from across Gunma Prefecture begin issuing challenges to test whether he truly belongs among them.
This 2014 anime film is the first of a trilogy adapting Shuichi Shigeno's manga. Masamitsu Hidaka directed it, working from a screenplay by Mayori Sekijima and Shigeno. It sits between Hidaka's earlier Pokémon projects and the two later entries in this series, which followed in 2015 and 2016. Mamoru Miyano voices Takumi, with Yuichi Nakamura as Keisuke, Daisuke Ono as his brother Ryosuke, Maaya Uchida as Natsuki Mogi, Minoru Shiraishi as Itsuki Takeuchi and Hiroaki Hirata as Bunta Fujiwara.
At 62 minutes, the film is a compact introduction to the story, and it carries a rating of 7.8 out of 10 on TMDB from 79 votes. It was produced in Japan by Kodansha, Shochiku, Sammy and avex pictures.
