Felix Ungar and Oscar Madison, once roommates who could barely tolerate each other, are brought back together years later when their children fall in love and plan to marry in California. Oscar's son Brucey and Felix's daughter Hannah are the couple, and both fathers must travel across the country to attend the ceremony. After meeting again at Los Angeles International Airport, the mismatched pair rent a car and set out on the long drive to the wedding town, with their old irritations and a string of mishaps along the way.
Directed by Howard Deutch, the film is the eighth feature in his directing career, following Grumpier Old Men and preceding The Replacements. Neil Simon wrote the screenplay and produced alongside Robert W. Cort and David Madden, returning to the characters he had created for the stage and screen. Jack Lemmon plays Felix and Walter Matthau plays Oscar, reprising roles they had originated decades earlier; Jonathan Silverman and Lisa Waltz appear as their children. The large credited cast and crew reflect a substantial studio production.
Released in April 1998, the film earned about 19 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.5 from roughly 11,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.3 from a much smaller pool of 159 votes. A critics' rating of 4.9 from 30 reviews places professional response below the audience scores.
