Short description

Geostorm is an action thriller about a network of satellites built to control Earth's climate after a series of devastating natural disasters. When the system begins malfunctioning and turning against the planet, a satellite designer is called in to help. He must work with his estranged brother to uncover what is really happening, while on the ground a conspiracy unfolds involving a threat to the US president.

The film is set largely in space, at the satellite control program, and in Washington, D.C. Gerard Butler plays the designer Jake Lawson, with Jim Sturgess as his brother Max, Abbie Cornish as Secret Service agent Sarah Wilson, and Alexandra Maria Lara, Daniel Wu and Eugenio Derbez in supporting roles. Dean Devlin directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Paul Guyot, and also produced alongside Dana Goldberg and David Ellison. It was Devlin's first feature as director, followed by Bad Samaritan in 2018.

Released in October 2017, the film runs 109 minutes and was a co-production between the United States, Canada and Hong Kong. Made on a budget of 120 million USD, it took in about 222 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.4 from roughly 132,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.1 from a smaller pool of voters. The film critics' rating stands at 3.6 from 96 reviews, noticeably lower than the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Many scenes from the film were reshot when Jerry Bruckheimer was brought on as a producer.
  • Some scenes were filmed at NASA's center in New Orleans.
  • Initially, the project was handled by Paramount Pictures, but then it came under the direction of Warner Bros.
  • Jerry Bruckheimer became one of the producers at a late stage in the film's production. The studio rejected the original version of the film due to unsatisfactory audience reactions at preview screenings. Reshoots and new footage were ordered, with Laeta Kalogridis as the screenwriter, and Danny Cannon directing the entire process. It took two weeks and, reportedly, $15 million.
