Short description
Catherine Stewart, a successful doctor, suspects her husband David, a music professor, of being unfaithful. After he misses a surprise party she arranged for his birthday, her doubts grow, and she hires a young escort named Chloe to approach him and report back. The accounts Chloe gives become increasingly intimate, and the arrangement between the two women turns into something Catherine did not anticipate. The film is a drama and thriller set in Toronto.
Atom Egoyan directed the film from a screenplay by Erin Cressida Wilson, with Ivan Reitman, Joe Medjuck and Jeffrey Clifford producing. It followed Egoyan's Where the Truth Lies and To Each His Own Cinema, and came before Devil's Knot, The Captive and Remember. Julianne Moore plays Catherine, Liam Neeson plays David, and Amanda Seyfried plays Chloe, with Max Thieriot, R. H. Thomson and Nina Dobrev among the credited cast of thirty.
Released in February 2010, the film runs 96 minutes and was made for about 14 million US dollars, a figure it matched at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.2 from roughly 83,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 from about 1,900 votes, indicating a modest but lasting level of interest. A critics' rating of 5.8 from 159 reviews places professional assessments slightly below the audience scores.

- The French studio “Studio Canal” fully funded the project, and filming took place in Toronto, Canada.
- Even before the film’s first theatrical release, the creators had fully recouped their costs by selling the rights to it in individual countries.
- In mid-March 2009, while filming was in full swing, Liam Neeson was forced to urgently leave for his wife, Natasha Richardson, who had received a fatal injury while skiing. Just a few days after her death, the actor returned to the set on his own initiative and continued working. Producers and the director accommodated him by altering the script so that all remaining scenes could be shot in two days.
- Both actresses who played the leading roles in the film, Julianne Moore and Amanda Seyfried, were born on the same day, December 3rd, 25 years apart.
