The Admiral: Roaring Currents
Short description
Set in 1597 during the Japanese invasion of Korea, the film follows Admiral Yi Sun-sin as he commands the remnants of the Joseon navy. Facing a vastly larger Japanese fleet, he chooses to make a stand at the Myeongryang strait rather than retreat, leading a small group of ships and their crews into a confrontation that will decide whether the kingdom can hold. The historical drama centres on the admiral's decision-making and the resolve of those who sail with him.
Kim Han-min directed and co-wrote the film, which followed his 2011 feature War of the Arrows and later became part of a trilogy continued by Hansan: Rising Dragon and Noryang: Deadly Sea. Choi Min-sik plays Yi Sun-sin, with Ryu Seung-ryong, Cho Jin-woong, Jin Goo, Lee Jung-hyun and Kim Myung-gon among the cast. Produced by CJ Entertainment and Big Stone Pictures for about 10 million USD, it went on to gross roughly 138 million USD worldwide. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from 339 votes, indicating generally favourable audience responses.
