Short description
Jacob has grown up hearing his grandfather's stories about an island refuge for children with unusual abilities, tales he stopped believing as he got older. After his grandfather dies under strange circumstances, the sixteen-year-old travels to the remote house off the coast of Wales where the old man once lived. There he finds the place in ruins but discovers that its former residents, cared for by the stern Miss Peregrine, may still exist, along with the enemies who once hunted them. Jacob comes to understand that he shares a quality with these children, and that it may be the key to protecting them.
Tim Burton directed the film, the twentieth of the twenty-two features he has made in chronological order, following Big Eyes and preceding Dumbo. Jane Goldman wrote the screenplay, Jenno Topping and Peter Chernin produced, and the large credited cast and crew number fifty-six and one hundred sixteen respectively. Eva Green plays Miss Peregrine, Asa Butterfield plays Jacob, and Samuel L. Jackson appears as the antagonist Barron, with Judi Dench, Rupert Everett and Chris O'Dowd in supporting roles.
The production cost about 110 million USD and returned roughly 296 million USD worldwide, a solid commercial result. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from around 208,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 out of 10 from more than 10,000 votes, while a critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from 259 reviews sits close to those audience figures, indicating a broadly similar reception across both groups.
