Short description
Tom Sherbourne, a veteran of the First World War, takes a job as a lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, a remote island off the coast of Western Australia. He marries Isabel, and the two settle into an isolated life together, but their hopes of starting a family are repeatedly disappointed. Then a rowboat washes ashore carrying a dead man and a living infant. Isabel persuades Tom to keep the baby and raise her as their own rather than report the discovery, a decision that weighs on the couple as the child grows. Their situation is complicated when they learn that the girl's birth mother, Hannah Roennfeldt, is still alive and searching for her.
Derek Cianfrance directed and wrote the screenplay, his third feature after Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines, and he made it before Roofman. Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander play the couple, with Rachel Weisz as Hannah and supporting turns from Bryan Brown, Jack Thompson and Caren Pistorius. The production, mounted by DreamWorks, Touchstone, Heyday Films and Reliance Entertainment, cost about 20 million dollars and returned roughly 26 million worldwide. Audience scores sit close together, with the film holding 7.2 on IMDb from around 63,000 votes and 7.1 on TMDB from a far smaller sample, while the critics' rating of 6.2 from 236 reviews is noticeably lower than what viewers gave it.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming took place in Stanley, a small coastal town in northwestern Tasmania. Some key scenes were filmed in the port of Chalmers, a port and suburb of Dunedin. The film is largely set on a lighthouse at Cape Campbell in Marlborough (one of the regions of New Zealand). The film crew and actors lived there during the 5.5-week shoot.
- Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander admitted that during filming, the film's director Derek Cianfrance suggested placing their trailers next to each other.
- Under the agreement, this is the last film from DreamWorks to be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures under the Touchstone label.
- Lucy, also known as Grace Rutherford, was played by five actresses – twins Elliot and Evangeline Newberry (Lucy/Grace as a baby), Georgie Gascoine (Lucy/Grace at 1 year old), Florence Clery (Lucy/Grace as a child), and Karen Pistorius (adult Lucy/Grace).

- Having met on the set of the film “The Light Between Oceans” in September 2014, Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender announced their relationship in December of the same year.
- For the filming of the movie in Stanley, a pier was specially constructed and “aged.” Many local residents, hired as extras, grew beards, as was customary for men in the 1920s.
