Short description

The Rift follows the crew of the Siren II, an advanced submarine sent to investigate the mysterious disappearance of its predecessor, the Siren I, within an oceanic rift. The mission involves Wick Hayes, the designer of the original vessel, who joins Captain Phillips and his former wife, Lieutenant Nina Crowley. As they descend into the depths, the crew discovers that the area is inhabited by hostile creatures and mutated organisms resulting from genetic experiments.

The film was directed by Juan Piquer Simón, appearing after his work on Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Supersonic Man, and Pieces. It was produced by Dister Group as a joint production between Spain and the United States, with a screenplay written by David Coleman. The cast features Jack Scalia, R. Lee Ermey, Ray Wise, Deborah Adair, John Toles-Bey, and Ely Pouget.

Produced with a budget of 1 million USD, the movie has received a modest reception from viewers. It holds a rating of 4.7/10 on IMDb based on 3,400 votes and an identical score of 4.7/10 on TMDB from 91 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In early versions of the script, the film's action was set in space.
  • Filming for the movie lasted 8 weeks, and another 14 weeks were spent on production and filming special effects.
  • Director Juan Piqué Simon did not speak English, and to communicate with the American actors, he used the services of a translator who was constantly present on the set.
  • After the release of George P. Cosmatos's 'Leviathan' (1989), which cost around $30 million and was produced by Dino De Laurentiis, the latter decided to finance this low-budget version of the film. De Laurentiis hired David Coleman to rewrite Colin Wilson's 250-page script. Coleman's script was written in English and had to be translated into Italian for De Laurentiis and into Spanish for director Juan Piqué Simon, who did not know English.
