Will Parker sails for an American crew backed by millionaire Morgan Weld at the 1983 America's Cup, and the campaign ends in defeat at the hands of the Australian boat. Wanting the trophy back, Will talks Morgan into funding an experimental yacht built to a design by Joe Heiser, the new partner of Will's former girlfriend Kate. Once the boat is ready, the Americans travel to Australia for another attempt at the cup. Carroll Ballard directed; Rudy Wurlitzer and Mac Gudgeon wrote the screenplay, and Tom Luddy and Mataichirô Yamamoto produced for American Zoetrope and Filmlink International. Matthew Modine plays Will, with Jennifer Grey as Kate, Cliff Robertson as Morgan, Jack Thompson as the Australian rival Jack Neville, Stellan Skarsgård as Joe and Rebecca Miller as Morgan's daughter Abigail.

The film runs 126 minutes and blends action with drama. It followed Ballard's The Black Stallion and came before Fly Away Home and Duma in the five features he directed. Reviews from audiences are moderate: on IMDb it holds 6.5/10 from roughly 3,300 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.2/10 from a much smaller base of 43 votes, a gap that reflects how few users have rated it there rather than a real disagreement. Made for about 29 million USD, it returned around 6 million USD worldwide, so its theatrical run fell well short of its cost.
