Short description
The account of keepers of the Warsaw Zoo, Jan and Antonina Zabinski, who helped save hundreds of people and animals during the Nazi invasion.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on a book by Diane Ackerman, based on the diaries of Antonina Żabińska.
  • Israel awarded the Żabiński family the title of Righteous Among the Nations.
  • Antonina Żabińska skillfully played the piano. When Nazis came to the house, she played a very loud and passionate melody to warn the Jews in their home that they needed to remain as quiet as possible.
  • The Warsaw Ghetto was created by the Nazis during the occupation of Poland. During its existence, the ghetto's population decreased from 450,000 to 37,000 people.
  • The real Jan Żabiński was appointed caretaker of Warsaw's parks and green spaces. He regularly entered the territory of the ghetto as an official, and despite the fear of being executed, he secretly supplied the ghetto's residents with food and medicine on each visit. He managed to smuggle out several dozen Jews in his truck and hide them in his house.
  • The events depicted in the film took place in Warsaw, but the filming was done in Prague.
  • Real lion cubs participated in the filming.
  • Between takes, Daniel Brühl taught Jessica Chastain German swear words.
