The Huntsman: Winter's War
Short description
Long before Snow White defeated Queen Ravenna, Ravenna watched her sister Freya suffer a betrayal in love that drove her from the kingdom. Freya withdrew to a distant snowbound palace, where she raised an army of huntsmen and forbade them from ever falling in love. Among those soldiers were Eric and Sara, who broke that rule and were banished for it. When Freya learns her sister has returned, the two queens join forces to dominate the land, and Eric and Sara must find a way to stop them.
Cedric Nicolas-Troyan directs this second film drawn from the Snow White tale, following his work as visual effects supervisor on the earlier instalment. It was his first feature as director; he later made Kate. Craig Mazin and Evan Spiliotopoulos wrote the screenplay, and Joe Roth produced. Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron return as the Huntsman and Ravenna, joined by Emily Blunt as Freya and Jessica Chastain as Sara, with Nick Frost and Sam Claflin in support. The film was a large production, made for a budget of 115 million US dollars and earning 165 million US dollars worldwide.
Audiences received it modestly: on IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from about 126,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 5,000 votes. Critics were less favourable, giving it 4.3 out of 10 across 217 reviews, a clear gap below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The runic inscription that briefly appears in the trailer means "I see."
- The first trailer for the film features the song "Castle" by Halsey.
- Chris Hemsworth, the lead actor, gained fame for his role as the Norse god Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. The character played by Emily Blunt is named Freya (another name from the Scandinavian pantheon).
- The shortlist of directors for the film, compiled by Universal Pictures, included Frank Darabont, Gavin O'Connor, and Andrés Muschietti. A contract was signed with Darabont, however, the film was ultimately directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, with Darabont simply contributing to the screenplay. Nicolas-Troyan worked on the special effects and was the second unit director on the set of "Snow White and the Huntsman" (2012).
- The trailer states that producer Joe Roth created "Maleficent" (2014) and "Alice in Wonderland" (2010), films from Disney, while "Snow White and the Huntsman 2" is a project from Universal Pictures. All of these are feature films based on fairy tales.
- The character of the warrior Sarah, played by Jessica Chastain, is mentioned in "Snow White and the Huntsman," where she is referred to as the huntsman's deceased wife.
