Red Riding: The Year of Our Lord 1980

Based on David Peace's novel, this British crime drama follows Peter Hunter, a senior Manchester police officer sent back to his home county of Yorkshire to quietly review the West Yorkshire force's stalled hunt for a serial killer known as the Ripper. Six years of unsolved murders have left the local investigation exposed to outside scrutiny, and Hunter's team is met with little cooperation as it examines how the case was handled. His inquiry also draws him toward a shooting at a club in 1974, an earlier episode that left him at odds with Yorkshire officers and that now appears connected to the present killings.

The film is the middle instalment of the Red Riding trilogy, three television features adapted from Peace's novels, and it follows James Marsh's earlier work on The King and the documentary Man on Wire. Tony Grisoni wrote the screenplay, and Paddy Considine leads a cast that includes Warren Clarke, Maxine Peake, James Fox, David Calder and Nicholas Woodeson, among 27 credited performers.

Released in 2009, the film drew an IMDb rating of 7.1 from around 11,000 votes and a TMDB rating of 6.9 from roughly 200 votes, while critics rated it 7.2 from 14 reviews. It is one of several crime films Marsh directed before Shadow Dancer and The Theory of Everything.
