Nicholas Nickleby

Nicholas Nickleby is a 2002 adventure drama adapted from Charles Dickens's novel. After the death of his father leaves the family penniless, Nicholas travels from Devon to London with his mother and sister Kate to seek help from his wealthy uncle Ralph. Instead of offering support, Ralph sets about dividing and exploiting his relatives, sending Nicholas to teach at a harsh Yorkshire school run by the cruel Wackford Squeers. Nicholas leaves the school with a mistreated pupil named Smike and tries to find his way back to his family, while his sister faces pressures of her own in London.

Douglas McGrath directed and wrote the screenplay, his third feature after Emma and Company Man. The cast includes Charlie Hunnam as Nicholas, Christopher Plummer as Ralph, Jim Broadbent as Squeers, Jamie Bell as Smike, Nathan Lane as Vincent Crummles and Anne Hathaway as Madeline Bray, among 32 credited performers.

Made for about 10 million dollars, the film returned roughly 4 million worldwide. It holds a rating of 7.1 out of 10 on IMDb from around 15,000 votes, and 6.8 out of 10 on TMDB from some 204 votes.
