Sam Leonard is a seventeen-year-old newcomer at Bridgeport High, and his first day makes clear he is at the bottom of the social order. Hoping to change that, he follows advice to reinvent himself through lies, telling classmates and teachers increasingly outlandish stories about his car, his family and his supposed celebrity connections. Then, after a mirror in his room is broken, everything he invented starts coming true, and the popularity he wanted arrives with complications he never planned for.
Christian Charles directed the film, his second feature after the 2002 documentary Comedian. Jon Lucas and Scott Moore wrote the screenplay, and Mark Canton and Steve Barnett produced it for Relativity Media and New Line Cinema, with production spanning Italy, the United States and South Africa. Ryan Pinkston leads as Sam, alongside Kate Mara, Teri Polo, Craig Kilborn, John Carroll Lynch and Cynthia Stevenson among a credited cast of twenty-three.
The film runs 91 minutes and mixes comedy, drama and family material. Released in March 2007, it drew limited enthusiasm: on IMDb it holds 5.5 out of 10 from roughly 3,600 votes, and on TMDB 5.4 out of 10 from about 150 votes. A critics' rating of 3.3 out of 10 from 18 reviews sits well below even those modest audience scores.
