Short description

Pete's Dragon centres on Pete, a ten-year-old boy living alone in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, whose only companion is a giant green dragon named Elliott. Elliott can make himself invisible to people, which keeps the pair hidden. When forest ranger Grace encounters the boy, she notices that his description of the dragon matches the tales her father, a wood carver, has told local children for years. With help from Natalie, the daughter of the owner of a nearby lumber mill, Grace tries to learn where Pete came from and what should happen to him next.

The film is a live-action reimagining of Disney's 1977 musical and was directed by David Lowery, who wrote the screenplay with Toby Halbrooks. It followed Lowery's debut feature Ain't Them Bodies Saints and came before A Ghost Story, The Old Man & the Gun, The Green Knight, Peter Pan & Wendy and later projects. Oakes Fegley plays Pete, with Bryce Dallas Howard as Grace, Robert Redford as Mr. Meacham, Wes Bentley as Jack, Karl Urban as Gavin and Oona Laurence as Natalie.

Released in August 2016, the film cost about 65 million dollars and took roughly 144 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 6.7 from about 64,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 from some 2,400 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 7.4 from 245 reviews, noticeably higher than the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In Don Chaffey’s 1977 musical of the same name, the heroine was named Nora, not Grace, and her father was named Lampi. Pete was an orphan who ran away from cruel foster parents, initially lacking human friends and being hated by the entire town. The musical also featured two stingy doctors attempting to kill his dragon, Elliot.
