Son of a Gun
Short description
JR, nineteen years old and jailed for a minor offence, is thrown into a prison where an inmate needs someone powerful looking out for him. He comes to the attention of Brendan Lynch, a well-known Australian criminal serving time, who takes the young man under his protection. The arrangement is not free: once JR is back outside, Lynch expects him to return the favour.
Julius Avery wrote and directed this Australian, British and Canadian crime thriller, his first feature as director. Ewan McGregor plays Lynch and Brenton Thwaites plays JR, with Alicia Vikander as Tasha, alongside Jacek Koman, Matt Nable and Tom Budge among a credited cast of forty-five. Timothy White produced the film, which runs 108 minutes and was made for a budget of 12 million US dollars.
Avery went on to direct Overlord, Samaritan and The Pope's Exorcist. On TMDB, Son of a Gun holds a rating of 6.4 out of 10 from 887 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- As an experienced stuntman, Nash Edgerton performed nearly all of his own stunts in the chase scene.
- Brenton Thwaites' character moves in criminal circles. To prepare for the role, the actor befriended a man who had been sentenced at a very young age and spent most of his life behind bars. Thwaites adopted many of his traits.
- Based on the true story of bank robber Brendan Abbott and his accomplice Brendan Berihon.
