Two Evil Eyes
Short description
Two Evil Eyes is a horror anthology made up of two separate stories drawn from the work of Edgar Allan Poe, with no connection between them beyond the author. In the first, directed by George A. Romero, a younger wife and her lover scheme to get their hands on the fortune of her wealthy, ailing husband, and their plan to control his estate goes badly wrong. The second, directed by Dario Argento, follows Roderick Usher, a photographer who specializes in crime scenes, and the violence that grows out of his relationship with a woman devoted to her cats.
The film was released in January 1990 and runs 120 minutes, a production of Italy and the United States with a budget of 9 million dollars. Romero and Argento wrote the screenplay with Franco Ferrini, and Achille Manzotti produced. Adrienne Barbeau and Harvey Keitel head the cast as Jessica Valdemar and Roderick Usher, alongside Ramy Zada, E.G. Marshall, Madeleine Potter and Bingo O'Malley. The film sits ninth among the fourteen features Romero directed, between Monkey Shines and The Dark Half, and tenth of the seventeen directed by Argento, between Opera and Trauma.
Reception was moderate. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 9,100 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 out of 10 from 357 votes. A critics' rating of 5.7 out of 10 from 19 reviews places it slightly below those audience scores, indicating a divided response rather than broad enthusiasm.
