Capture the Flag
Short description
Capture the Flag is a Spanish animated adventure about Mike Goldwing, a twelve-year-old surfer whose father and grandfather, both astronauts, have not spoken to each other in years. Mike wants to bring the family back together. At the same time, a wealthy businessman named Richard Carson intends to travel to the Moon, claim its resources for himself and remove the traces left by the Apollo 11 landing. Mike sets out to stop him, joined by his friends Amy and Marty, a pet chameleon, and his grandfather Frank, a former astronaut. The mission becomes a way to save both the Moon and Mike's family.
Enrique Gato directed the film, his second feature after Tad, the Lost Explorer in 2012 and before Tad, the Lost Explorer, and the Secret of King Midas in 2017. The screenplay is by Jordi Gasull, Javier López Barreira and Neil Landau, and the voice cast includes Carme Calvell, Michelle Jenner, Javier Balas, Dani Rovira, Camilo García and Toni Mora. With a budget of about 13 million dollars, it is one of the larger Spanish animated productions of its time.
The film was released in 2015 and had a modest commercial run, with worldwide box office of roughly 8 million dollars, below its budget. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.8 from around 4,300 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 from about 262 votes, placing it in middling territory for audiences in both places.
What's left behind the scenes
- Most of the actors who voiced the film in Castilian Spanish are from Barcelona, so only a few people had to be brought in for the Catalan dubbing. Virtually none of the actors from Barcelona needed to be replaced.
- The film was initially dubbed in English, and translated into other languages during post-production. The translated versions, titled 'Atrapa La Bandera,' were released in Spain before the United States.
- The characters named Steve Higgs and Bill Hags are parodies of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.
- Oriol Tarragó is the only actor who voiced his character in all three languages.
- This is the last on-screen appearance of the Paramount Pictures logo (2002-2011) which distributed the film.
- The animated film 'A Flag for Luna' was released in three languages – Castilian, Catalan (or Valencian), and English.
- NASA astronauts Alan Bean and Michael E. López-Alegría served as technical consultants. Bean, a participant in the Apollo 12 mission, became the fourth person to step onto the surface of the Moon (November 19, 1969). López-Alegría became the first Spaniard to fly into space.
