Confessions is a Japanese drama-thriller about Yuko Moriguchi, a middle school teacher whose four-year-old daughter is found drowned in the school pool. The death is recorded as an accident, but Yuko believes two students in her class are responsible. On her last day at the school, she addresses her students, describes what she believes happened, and tells them she has already begun to take her revenge. Her plan unsettles the whole class, exposing a group of thirteen-year-olds whose cruelty has gone largely unchecked.
The film was released in 2010 and directed by Tetsuya Nakashima, who also wrote the screenplay. It followed his Kamikaze Girls (2004) and Memories of Matsuko (2006), and came before The World of Kanako (2014) and The Brightest Sun (2026). Takako Matsu plays Yuko Moriguchi, with Masaki Okada as Yoshiteru Terada, Yoshino Kimura as Naoki's mother, and Yukito Nishii, Kaoru Fujiwara and Ai Hashimoto among the students. It was produced by Yuji Ishida, Genki Kawamura and Yutaka Suzuki, with 31 credited cast members and 40 credited crew members.
The film runs 107 minutes and was made in Japan by TOHO, Hakuhodo DY Media Partners, Sony Music Entertainment and Nippan Group Holdings. It took about 45 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.7 out of 10 from 45,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.6 out of 10 from 1,025 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 6.5 out of 10 from 16 reviews, so audiences rated it more favourably than critics did.
