Lee Gates hosts a financial television show where his stock tips have made him a star on Wall Street. When one of his viewers, Kyle Budwell, follows his advice and loses everything, he storms the studio during a live broadcast and takes Gates hostage on air. Gates and his producer, Patty Fenn, must keep themselves and the crew alive while an audience watches the standoff unfold, and the investigation behind the lost money begins to expose uncomfortable truths.
Jodie Foster directed the film, her fourth feature after Little Man Tate, Home for the Holidays and The Beaver. George Clooney, one of the producers, plays Gates, with Julia Roberts as Fenn and Jack O'Connell as Budwell. Dominic West, Caitríona Balfe and Giancarlo Esposito appear in supporting roles. Jim Kouf, Jamie Linden and Alan DiFiore wrote the screenplay.
Made for around 27 million dollars, the film took in roughly 93 million worldwide, a solid return on that budget. Audiences rate it modestly: on IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from about 112,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from over 3,200 votes. A critics' score of 6 out of 10 from 280 reviews puts professional opinion roughly level with the general audience response.
