Set in Los Angeles on Christmas Eve, Tangerine follows Sin-Dee Rella, a transgender sex worker who has just finished a twenty-eight-day jail sentence. Reunited with her friend Alexandra, who also works the streets, she learns that her boyfriend and pimp, Chester, has been seeing someone else while she was locked up. Rather than let it go, Sin-Dee sets out across the city to find the other woman and confront Chester, with Alexandra drawn along on the search. Their path crosses a range of Los Angeles milieus, among them an Armenian family coping with its own troubles over infidelity.
Sean Baker directed and co-wrote the film with Chris Bergoch; it followed his earlier features Take Out and Starlet and preceded The Florida Project, Red Rocket, Anora and Sandiwara. Kitana Kiki Rodriguez plays Sin-Dee, with Mya Taylor as Alexandra, Karren Karagulian as Razmik, Mickey O'Hagen as Dinah, Alla Tumanian as Ashken and James Ransone as Chester, in a credited cast of seventy-four. The film was produced by Baker, Shih-Ching Tsou and Darren Dean through Duplass Brothers Productions and other companies, and runs eighty-seven minutes.
On IMDb, Tangerine holds a critics' rating of 7.9 out of 10 from 168 reviews, while on TMDB it has an audience rating of 6.9 out of 10 from 827 votes. The gap suggests critics responded to the film more warmly than general viewers did.
