Short description

Two friends from Miami utilize a little-known US government program that allows small businesses to bid on military contracts. After finding early success, they secure a 300 million dollar deal from the Pentagon to provide weapons to American allies in Afghanistan. The scale of the agreement leads them into a lifestyle of luxury and forces them to deal with dangerous individuals, including some within the American government.

Directed by Todd Phillips, this crime comedy drama followed his previous work on The Hangover Part III. The film stars Miles Teller, Jonah Hill, Ana de Armas, and Bradley Cooper, who also served as a producer. The production involved Warner Bros. Pictures, RatPac Entertainment, Green Hat Films, and The Mark Gordon Company.

Produced with a budget of 50 million USD, the movie earned 86 million USD at the worldwide box office. It has an IMDb rating of 7.1/10 based on 295,000 votes and a rating of 7/10 on TMDB from 5,698 votes. These audience scores are higher than the rating of 6/10 given by film critics across 235 reviews.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The original title of the film translates to "War Dogs".
  • The arms manufacturers' forum in Las Vegas, attended by David and Ephraim, is a fictional creation of the film's authors, but it has real-life counterparts. SHOT Show – the world's largest exhibition of hunting and shooting sports equipment – is held annually (usually in January) and lasts four days, in recent years in Las Vegas. Tanks, rockets, and other military equipment shown in the film were filmed at IDEX – an international arms and military equipment exhibition held every two years in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
  • For security reasons, the film was referred to as 'AK-47' during filming in Miami.
  • In 2016, Efraim Diveroli sued Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., director Todd Phillips, producer Bradley Cooper, and several others. The lawsuit demanded a ban on the film's release. The plaintiff claimed that the film was based on his self-published memoir, 'Once A Gun Runner'.
  • The International Hotel, where David, played by Miles Teller, is sitting, is not located in Albania, but in the center of Bucharest, the capital of Romania.
  • The events taking place in the plot in Albania were filmed in Romania. Even the workers in the warehouse in one of the scenes speak Romanian.
  • Jonah Hill and his character Ephraim Diveroli were both born on December 20th.
  • Initially, the film was titled the same as the Guy Lawson article it was based on – "Arms and the Dudes".
  • The film's poster is a parody of the famous poster for Brian De Palma's crime drama 'Scarface' (1983), which the main characters of 'War Dogs' constantly reference.
  • The image of the sunset on the beach that Efraim hangs on the wall in his office is another reference to 'Scarface' (Brian De Palma, 1983). The same landscape was painted on the wall in Frank Lopez’s office.
  • The first film directed by Todd Phillips not featuring Matt Walsh.
  • The role of Iz is played by Cuban-Spanish actress Ana de Armas. Her surname means 'weapons' in Spanish.
  • David and Ephraim live in downtown Miami. During the arrest, however, they are taken out of the building on Miami Beach, approximately 8 kilometers from the city center.
  • Initially, Jesse Eisenberg and Shia LaBeouf were chosen for the lead roles.
  • The real David Pakouz, portrayed by Miles Teller in the film, appears in a cameo as a musician playing guitar in a nursing home.
  • The film is based on true events.
  • David Pakouz is 4 years older than Efraim Diveroli. In reality, Miles Teller is 4 years younger than Jonah Hill.
