Mistress America

Tracy has just started her first year at a New York college, and the experience has fallen short of what she hoped for: she is lonely and hasn't found the exciting city life she expected. That begins to change when Brooke enters her life. Brooke is about thirty, lives near Times Square, and is about to become Tracy's stepsister, since Tracy's mother is engaged to Brooke's father. Self-assured and full of schemes, Brooke draws the younger woman into her plans and shows her a version of Manhattan she had only imagined.

Mistress America is a comedy directed by Noah Baumbach, the seventh of the fourteen features he has directed to date, following Frances Ha and preceding While We're Young. Baumbach wrote the screenplay with Greta Gerwig, who plays Brooke; Lola Kirke plays Tracy. The cast also includes Matthew Shear, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Heather Lind and Michael Chernus, among roughly forty credited performers.

The film was released in August 2015 and took in about 3 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 7.3 from 187 reviews, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5 from 607 votes, so critics rated it somewhat more favorably than the wider audience did.
