Jesus has spent forty days fasting and praying in the wilderness, and as he makes his way out he is met by the Devil, who wants to shake his faith. Their confrontation takes an unexpected form: a family scraping a living in the desert, where a father is building a house while his son dreams of leaving. Jesus joins their work, listens to their worries and tries to ease the tension between father and son, and the Devil turns the whole situation into a test that concerns both the family's future and Jesus' own sense of mission.
Rodrigo García wrote and directed this American production, his sixth feature, arriving between Delirium and Four Good Days. Ewan McGregor plays Jesus and also the Devil, with Ciarán Hinds, Ayelet Zurer and Tye Sheridan as the family members. The film runs 98 minutes.
Its reception was mixed. On IMDb it holds 5.6 from roughly 4,700 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 from a much smaller sample of 182. A critics' rating of 6.7 from 71 reviews sits above both audience scores, so professional viewers responded more warmly than the general public did.
