Carol Petersen is a retired teacher in her seventies whose days follow a steady routine, spent largely with three close friends and their card games. When a sudden loss shakes that order, she becomes sharply aware of the solitude that has settled on her since her husband died twenty years earlier. Encouraged by her friends, she tries speed dating and other ways of meeting men, and soon finds herself drawn into two unexpected relationships with very different people, each of which tests what she assumed about companionship and about growing older.
The film is a comedy-drama directed by Brett Haley, who wrote the screenplay with Marc Basch and also produced it. It was Haley's first feature, made before The Hero, Hearts Beat Loud and the films that followed. Blythe Danner plays Carol, with Martin Starr, June Squibb, Rhea Perlman, Mary Kay Place and Sam Elliott in supporting roles.
Released in 2015, the film runs 92 minutes and was made for about 1 million dollars, going on to take roughly 7 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from around 9,800 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.3 from about 194 votes. A critics' rating of 7.3 from 92 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.
