Emma Taylor is a graduate student who has moved to New York City and lives largely through her laptop, her phone and the other connected devices that fill her days. What she does not know is that someone has broken into those devices and is watching her, tracking her movements and recording her private life. The surveillance begins as an intrusion she cannot see, then turns into an obsession that pushes the watcher to leave the virtual world behind and enter her real one.
Ratter is a 2015 American thriller directed by Branden Kramer, who also wrote the screenplay, with Ben Browning, David Bausch and Jamie H. Zelermyer producing for Start Motion Pictures. Ashley Benson plays Emma, and the cast includes Matt McGorry, Rebecca Naomi Jones, Jon Bass, Kaili Vernoff and Ted Koch. The film is built around the perspective of the technology Emma uses, so much of what the audience sees arrives through screens she herself relies on.
The film runs eighty minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 4.8 from around twelve thousand votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.2 from roughly three hundred forty votes, figures that place it modestly with both audiences. It is a low-budget genre release that arrived in early 2015 and has since found a small viewership rather than a wide one.
