Short description
Dark Phoenix follows the X-Men after a space rescue mission goes wrong. Jean Grey is struck by a cosmic force that leaves her alive but transformed, granting her enormous power she cannot understand or control. As she grows increasingly unstable and dangerous to those closest to her, the team that raised her must decide whether to save her or stop her, while an alien presence seeks to exploit what she has become. Their bond as a family fractures under the strain.
Simon Kinberg wrote and directed the film, his second time behind the camera after 2015's Fantastic Four, with a third film, The 355, following in 2022. Sophie Turner plays Jean, joined by James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy, Tye Sheridan as Scott Summers, Michael Fassbender as Erik Lensherr, and Alexandra Shipp as Ororo Munroe. Lauren Shuler Donner and Todd Hallowell produced alongside Kinberg.
The film cost about 200 million dollars and returned roughly 252 million worldwide. Its audience scores are modest, with 5.7 out of 10 on IMDb from 227,000 votes and 6 out of 10 on TMDB from 7,311 votes. A film critics' rating of 4.7 out of 10 from 384 reviews places it below those audience scores. It runs 114 minutes.
What's left behind the scenes
- After several unsuccessful test screenings, the producers considered foregoing a wide theatrical release in favor of a premiere on the streaming service Hulu, owned by The Walt Disney Company.
- The film underwent numerous reshoots, causing the premiere date to be postponed several times. "Dark Phoenix" was initially scheduled for April 2018, then moved to November 2018, and subsequently to February 14, 2019. Finally, the release date was set for June 7, 2019.
- While preparing for the role of Phoenix, actress Sophie Turner studied mental illnesses.
- Tai Sheridan, who played Cyclops, admitted that he did not work out for the film, but simply wore a special suit during filming.
- The directorial debut of screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg.
- This is the first film in the franchise that did not feature the character of Wolverine as played by Hugh Jackman, as the actor insisted that "Logan" (2017) be the final chord for Wolverine.
- This film was intended to launch a new series of films about the X-Men with young heroes (Jean Grey, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Storm, Mystique, Beast, Quicksilver, Jubilee, Blindspot), already introduced to the public in previous films, but these plans had to be abandoned due to unsatisfactory box office results.
