Still of the Night is a 1982 American mystery thriller written and directed by Robert Benton. Psychiatrist Sam Rice learns that one of his patients, George Bynum, has been murdered. The investigating detective, Vitucci, comes to him for information, but Rice withholds what he knows. Bynum's mistress, Brooke Reynolds, then visits Rice, and he becomes drawn to her even though her behaviour marks her as a suspect. As the police keep pressing him, Rice begins looking into the killing himself and finds that he too is being targeted.
The film was released a few years after Benton's Kramer vs. Kramer and was produced by Arlene Donovan. Roy Scheider plays Rice, Meryl Streep plays Brooke Reynolds, and Jessica Tandy appears as Grace Rice, with Joe Grifasi as Vitucci, Sara Botsford as Gail Phillips and Josef Sommer as George Bynum.
Produced by United Artists and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on a budget of about 10 million dollars, the film took in roughly 6 million worldwide, less than it cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from around 7,600 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 5.8 out of 10 from nine reviews places it close to the audience scores.
