Short description
Vincent, a French Special Forces veteran who has returned from Afghanistan, is struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder. He finds work with a private security firm, and an assignment brings him to the estate of a wealthy Lebanese businessman named Imad Whalid, who hires him to protect his wife Jessie and their young son Ali while he is away. As Vincent settles into the job, his growing attraction to Jessie complicates his position, and his paranoia leaves him unsure whether the dangers he senses around the property are real or a product of his condition.
Alice Winocour directed and wrote the film, originally titled Maryland, which was released in 2015. It is the second of the five features she has directed, following Augustine in 2012. Matthias Schoenaerts plays Vincent, with Diane Kruger as Jessie and Paul Hamy, Victor Pontecorvo, Zaïd Errougui-Demonsant and Percy Kemp in supporting roles. The film runs 100 minutes and was produced through SCOPE Pictures, France 3 Cinéma, Mars Films and Dharamsala as a Belgian-French co-production, with Emilie Tisné producing.
On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.7 out of 10 based on 239 votes, a modest figure that suggests a mixed response from viewers on that platform. The film blends drama and thriller elements, using Vincent's psychological state as the lens through which the story's tension develops.

- Mattias Schönarts gave an interview in Flemish, in which he admitted that he had become so engrossed in the role that he "began to lose his mind," specifically "stopped sleeping." This resulted in several hospital stays.
- Variety magazine named "Maryland" as one of the 21 films that caught the attention of the jury and critics at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.
- The "Maryland" in the film's title has nothing to do with the name of an American state. It refers to the name of a villa in the south of France where the film's action unfolds. Alice Winocour said she chose the word because, for the French, it implies something neglected, dark, and suspicious.
- Director Alice Winocour admitted she filmed this movie "inspired by" Matthias Schoenaerts. Working on the project took them two years. Winocour said that Schoenaerts possesses a certain sensuality, and she wanted to film him as men film women, portraying him as an object of desire. However, the director noted that Schoenaerts' character is much deeper and more multifaceted than he initially appears.
- During filming, actor Mattias Schönarts slept only two hours a day. He fully immersed himself in his character, who is tormented by fears and disturbing visions.
- Director Alice Winocour became interested in military photojournalists, who admitted how difficult it was for them to return to normal life after witnessing the horrors of war.
