Mary Portman is a child psychologist living in rural New England, where she cares for her stepson Stephen, who is in a vegetative state after the car crash that killed her husband. She has decided to move him into a specialised care facility, but a severe snowstorm forces her to wait. Before the storm arrives, she takes in Tom, one of her young patients, and on his first night he disappears in the worsening weather. As she searches for him, Mary is troubled by hallucinations, paranoia and nightmares, and strange things begin happening in her home.
Shut In is a 2016 drama thriller directed by Farren Blackburn, his second feature after Hammer of the Gods in 2013, from a screenplay by Christina Hodson. Naomi Watts leads as Mary, with Charlie Heaton as Stephen, Oliver Platt as her colleague Dr. Wilson, David Cubitt, Crystal Balint and Jacob Tremblay as Tom among the cast. The film runs 91 minutes and was made for about 10 million dollars, a modest figure for a production shot across Canada, the United States and France.
It earned roughly 13 million dollars worldwide, a limited return against its budget. On IMDb it holds a 4.8 rating from over 15,000 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 5.3 from 745 votes, placing audience response around the middle. The critics' rating of 3.2 out of 10, drawn from 44 reviews, is lower than both audience scores, indicating that reviewers were considerably less receptive to the film than viewers were.
