The Whole Truth is a courtroom drama centred on Richard Ramsey, a defence attorney who takes on the case of Mike Lassiter, a teenager accused of killing his wealthy father, Boone. Ramsey has promised the boy's mother, Loretta, that he will keep her son out of prison, even though the case is far more personal than he would normally accept. Mike has admitted to the killing but has since stopped speaking, refusing to answer questions from anyone, including his own lawyer. Ramsey's assistant, Janelle, pursues her own lines of inquiry as the trial unfolds, and the testimony of the witnesses proves less straightforward than it first appears.
Courtney Hunt directed the film, her second feature after Frozen River, working from a screenplay by Nicholas Kazan. Keanu Reeves plays Ramsey, with Renée Zellweger as Loretta, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Janelle, Gabriel Basso as Mike and Jim Belushi as Boone. The production was handled by Atlas Entertainment, Lionsgate, FilmNation Entertainment and Likely Story, and the film runs 93 minutes.
Released in 2016, the film drew a critics' rating of 4.9/10 from 32 reviews, while audiences were somewhat more favourable: 6.6/10 on TMDB from around 1,300 votes and 6.2/10 on IMDb from roughly 37,000 votes. Its worldwide box office came to about 2 million USD.
