Bad Timing

Alex Linden is an American psychoanalyst and university lecturer living in Vienna, where he becomes involved with Milena Flaherty, a younger American woman he meets through a mutual friend. Though Milena is married and resists being tied to any one man, the two begin a turbulent affair marked by growing possessiveness on Alex's side. After Milena is brought to a hospital emergency room with a drug overdose, Inspector Netusil investigates the circumstances leading up to it, questioning Alex about the nature of their relationship and whether the overdose was a suicide attempt or something more deliberate. The story moves between the hospital and the couple's past in a fragmented chronology.

Bad Timing was directed by Nicolas Roeg, the fifth of the thirteen films he directed in chronological order, following The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) and preceding Insignificance (1985). Yale Udoff wrote the screenplay, and Jeremy Thomas and Tim Van Rellim produced. Art Garfunkel plays Alex, Theresa Russell plays Milena, and Harvey Keitel plays Inspector Netusil, with Denholm Elliott, Daniel Massey and Dana Gillespie among the credited cast of twenty-one.
