Short description
Julieta lives in Madrid and is preparing to leave the city for Portugal when a chance meeting changes her plans. Bea, a childhood friend of Julieta's daughter Antía, tells her that she recently ran into Antía, who she has not seen or heard from in years. Julieta calls off her trip and begins writing an account of her life, going back to the train journey where she met Antía's father. The story follows her from a hopeful period in the mid-1980s through the tragedy that came between her and her daughter and the long years of silence that followed. Her daughter left home at eighteen without explanation, and Julieta's attempts to find her have only shown how much about Antía she does not know.
Pedro Almodóvar directed and wrote the screenplay, adapting three short stories by the Canadian Nobel laureate Alice Munro. The film is the sixteenth of the twenty-two features he has directed, arriving after I'm So Excited! (2013) and before Pain and Glory (2019). Esther García and Agustín Almodóvar produced. Emma Suárez plays Julieta in the present, with Adriana Ugarte as the younger Julieta; Daniel Grao, Inma Cuesta, Darío Grandinetti and Michelle Jenner appear in supporting roles. The film runs 98 minutes.
