Short description

In a deserted warehouse outside Boston in 1978, two groups meet to complete an illegal arms deal. One side is made up of Irishmen, including Chris and Frank, who are looking to buy; the other consists of intermediaries and shady dealers, among them Justine, Ord and Vernon, who have arranged the sale. The negotiations are tense from the start, and after a misunderstanding nobody is willing to back down. A shot is fired, and the meeting turns into a running gun battle in which everyone is out for themselves and the stock of weapons becomes the means of survival.

Ben Wheatley directed and co-wrote the film with Amy Jump; Andrew Starke produced it. Free Fire sits between High-Rise and Rebecca in Wheatley's filmography, which by this point also included Down Terrace, Kill List, Sightseers, The ABCs of Death and, later, In the Earth, Meg 2: The Trench, Bulk and Normal. Cillian Murphy plays Chris, Brie Larson plays Justine, Armie Hammer plays Ord, and Sharlto Copley plays Vernon, with Jack Reynor as Harry and Sam Riley as Stevo among the cast.

Made on a budget of 7 million US dollars, the film took around 4 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 from more than 53,000 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 6.2 from over 1,200 votes. A critics' rating of 6.4 from 236 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming was interrupted on the second day by a visit from the police. Someone in a nearby store heard gunshots and called the police.
  • In the scene where Charlto Copley's character is engulfed in flames, no computer graphics were used. The actor refused a stunt double and performed the scene himself in a fireproof suit. Four people with fire extinguishers were on standby nearby.
  • Luke Evans was cast as Vernon, but he was unable to participate in the project due to filming in Bill Condon's musical film "Beauty and the Beast" (2017). The role was then given, with corresponding changes, to South African actor Sharlto Copley.
  • The main reason Ben Wheatley set the film in the 1970s was the absence of mobile phones at that time.
  • Olivia Wilde was initially cast in the lead role in the film, but soon left the project.
  • The role of Chris was written for Cillian Murphy after he approached the director and said he would like to play it.
