Beyond the Clouds

Beyond the Clouds follows a film director wandering through France and Italy with his camera, scouting locations while four encounters take shape in his imagination. In Ferrara, a man meets a woman he once loved and pulls away rather than let reality fall short of his memory. In Portofino, the director himself is drawn to a young woman who confesses to a terrible act. In Paris, a wife whose husband is unfaithful begins a relationship with another man. In Aix-en-Provence, a young man pursues a woman who is preparing to enter a convent. John Malkovich plays the director; Fanny Ardant, Chiara Caselli, Irène Jacob, Sophie Marceau and Vincent Perez appear in the episodes.

The film is a collaboration between Michelangelo Antonioni and Wim Wenders, who wrote the screenplay with Tonino Guerra. It was Antonioni's twelfth film as director in chronological order, arriving after Roma, and Wenders's tenth, following Lisbon Story. It was released in October 1995 and runs 110 minutes, a co-production between Germany, Italy and France.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.4 from around 6,500 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 6.2 from roughly 142 votes. A critics' rating of 6.5 from 22 reviews places it close to the audience scores on both platforms, suggesting a similar, moderately positive response across viewers and reviewers.
