Short description

The Glass Castle follows Jeannette Walls from a childhood spent moving from place to place with her nomadic, nonconformist family to her adult life in New York, where she works as a gossip columnist and keeps her past hidden. Her father, Rex, is a charismatic dreamer whose elaborate plans and vivid stories distract his children from their poverty, while her mother, Rose Mary, is an eccentric artist more devoted to her painting than to raising a family. As Jeanette and her siblings grow up, they increasingly look after one another, and the promised glass castle Rex plans to build comes to stand for everything he fails to deliver. The film is based on Walls's memoir of the same name.

Destin Daniel Cretton directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Andrew Lanham, following his 2013 film Short Term 12 and preceding Just Mercy, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Brie Larson plays Jeannette, with Woody Harrelson as Rex and Naomi Watts as Rose Mary; Sarah Snook, Max Greenfield and Ella Anderson also appear. Erik Feig, Gil Netter and Ken Kao produced for Lionsgate and Waypoint Entertainment, among others.

Made for about 9 million dollars, the film took roughly 22 million dollars worldwide, a modest return relative to its cost. On IMDb it holds 7.1 out of 10 from more than 41,000 votes, and on TMDB it also holds 7.1 out of 10, from around 900 votes. A critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from 165 reviews places it below both audience scores, so viewers responded more warmly than reviewers.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on real events and tells the story of a family forced to hide from government agencies.
  • Jennifer Lawrence was chosen for the lead role in the film and was also slated to serve as a producer. However, Lawrence left the project, and Brie Larson was approved for the lead role.
