The Man with the Iron Heart dramatises the 1942 assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the SS and Gestapo official who helped shape the Nazi plan to exterminate Europe's Jews. Tracing his rise alongside his wife Lina, who drew him toward Nazi ideology, the film follows his appointment to lead the occupied Czech lands and the response it provoked: a mission by Czechoslovak resistance figures, trained in Britain and backed by their exile government, to kill him in Prague. Two volunteers, Jan Kubiš and Jozef Gabčík, are parachuted in for the operation, which gives the film its title. What follows is both a portrait of a senior Nazi and a account of the conspirators who hunted him.
Cédric Jimenez directs, working from a screenplay he wrote with David Farr and Audrey Diwan. It was his second feature, arriving between The Connection and The Stronghold, and it was mounted as a large European co-production across Belgium, Britain, the United States, France and the Czech Republic. Jason Clarke plays Heydrich and Rosamund Pike plays Lina, with Jack O'Connell and Jack Reynor as the two parachutists; Mia Wasikowska and Stephen Graham are also among a credited cast of thirty.
Made for roughly 33 million dollars, the film returned about 4 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.4 from just over 18,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 from 835, while the critics' rating stands at 5.8 from nine reviews.
