Their Finest

Their Finest is set in London during the Blitz, when much of the city is emptied by the war effort. The Ministry of Information hires Catrin Cole, a screenwriter, to bring a woman's perspective to its propaganda films and lift the spirits of a weary public. She is drawn into a project about two sisters who took a boat across the Channel to rescue wounded soldiers, working alongside the producer Tom Buckley, while an all-male studio staff greets her contributions with doubt. A quarrelsome veteran actor and a married writing pair round out the chaotic production.

Lone Scherfig directed the film, which came after The Riot Club in her filmography and before The Kindness of Strangers. Gaby Chiappe wrote the screenplay, and Gemma Arterton leads as Catrin, with Sam Claflin as Buckley and Bill Nighy as the actor Ambrose Hilliard. Jack Huston, Helen McCrory and Eddie Marsan appear in support. The production was made by BBC Film, EuropaCorp, HanWay Films and Film i Väst across the United Kingdom, France and Sweden.

Against a budget of about 10 million dollars, the film took roughly 13 million dollars worldwide. It runs 117 minutes.
