The Unknown Girl

Jenny Davin is a young general practitioner working temporarily in a practice in Seraing, Belgium, while she waits to take up a more prestigious position. One evening, after office hours, someone rings the doorbell of her surgery. She decides not to answer, telling her trainee Julien that anyone with a real emergency would have rung more insistently. The next day, police arrive to review the practice's surveillance footage: a young woman has been found dead nearby without any identification, and the recordings show she was the person who rang the bell. Wracked with guilt and unable to let the matter rest, Jenny sets out to learn who the woman was and what brought her to the door.

Sisters and regular collaborators Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne directed the film and wrote the screenplay, with Denis Freyd producing. Adèle Haenel plays Jenny, and Olivier Bonnaud plays Julien; Jérémie Renier, Louka Minnella, Nadège Ouedraogo and Christelle Cornil appear in supporting roles. It followed Two Days, One Night in the directors' filmography and preceded Tori and Lokita.

Released in October 2016, the Belgian-French production runs 106 minutes. Its worldwide box office total of about 2 million dollars was modest. On IMDb it holds 6.5/10 from roughly 11,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.2/10 from 439 votes. A critics' rating of 6.4/10 from 95 reviews places it close to the audience scores, indicating a fairly similar level of appreciation across both groups.
