Final Portrait

In 1964 Paris, the American writer and art critic James Lord is asked by his friend Alberto Giacometti to sit for a portrait. The Swiss sculptor and painter, by then one of the most respected artists of his generation, promises that the work will take only an afternoon. The sitting stretches on, as Giacometti repaints passages, discards canvases in pursuit of an ideal he cannot reach, and postpones appointments. Around the two men are the artist's wife Annette and his companion Caroline, along with his brother Diego and the dealer Pierre Matisse, while Lord gains an intimate view of a demanding and often chaotic working method.

Stanley Tucci directed and wrote the screenplay, his fourth feature as director following Big Night, The Impostors and Joe Gould's Secret. Geoffrey Rush plays Giacometti and Armie Hammer plays Lord, with Clémence Poésy, Tony Shalhoub, Sylvie Testud and James Faulkner in supporting roles. The film is a British and American production.

Final Portrait runs 87 minutes. It took about 2 million dollars worldwide, a modest return for a drama of this scale. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 6,400 votes, and on TMDB 6 out of 10 from about 189 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6 out of 10 from 131 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores on both platforms, suggesting a warmer response from reviewers than from general viewers.
