The House

Scott and Kate Johansen are delighted when their daughter Alex is accepted to her dream university, but the scholarship they had relied on falls through, leaving them unable to cover her tuition. They learn that the money set aside for her had been diverted, and with no way to pay, they look for another solution. Their neighbour Frank, who has his own reasons for needing a large sum, suggests a plan: run an illegal casino out of his house. The couple agrees, and their suburban home becomes the setting for a gambling operation that draws in friends and neighbours.

The film is a comedy directed by Andrew J. Cohen, who wrote the screenplay with Brendan O'Brien. It was produced by Will Ferrell, Joseph Drake and Nathan Kahane, with Ferrell and Amy Poehler starring as Scott and Kate, and Jason Mantzoukas as Frank. Ryan Simpkins plays Alex, and Nick Kroll and Allison Tolman also appear.

Released in the summer of 2017, the film runs eighty-eight minutes. Made on a budget of forty million dollars, it earned about thirty-four million worldwide, less than its cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.6 from around fifty thousand votes, and on TMDB it also scores 5.6, from roughly a thousand votes; critics gave it 4 out of 10 across eighty-one reviews, a lower figure than either audience score.
