Short description
A military operation is interrupted when an alien spacecraft crashes on Earth. The soldier Quinn McKenna manages to overpower the creature and takes its equipment, which he sends home to his family. His young son Rory, who is bullied at school and has a gift for learning languages quickly, activates the gear, drawing the universe's deadliest hunters back to the planet. Quinn joins a group of ex-soldiers and the biologist Casey Bracket to fight the returning threat, while the aliens themselves have been genetically enhanced with DNA from other species.
Shane Black directed and co-wrote the film with Fred Dekker, following his earlier work on Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3 and The Nice Guys. Boyd Holbrook leads as Quinn, with Trevante Rhodes, Sterling K. Brown, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key and Olivia Munn among the main cast. Produced by John Davis for 20th Century Fox and TSG Entertainment, it is set within the Predator series.
The film opened in September 2018 and earned about 161 million dollars worldwide against a budget of 88 million. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.3 from roughly 162,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.6 from around 5,275 votes. A critics' rating of 5 out of 10, drawn from 296 reviews, sits between the two audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Benicio Del Toro was originally slated to star, but the actor was forced to leave the project due to a busy schedule and was replaced by Boyd Holbrook.
- The character of Bixley (Thomas Jane) suffers from Tourette's syndrome. Shane Black has the same condition.
- The entire storyline involving the character of Edward James Olmos was cut from the final version.
- The tagline on the poster, "You won't even see him coming," is a reference to the Predator race, as well as to the sci-fi film by writer and director Shane Black, "Iron Man 3" (2013), where the Mandarin, played by Ben Kingsley, uttered this phrase – only about himself.
- Riding the wave of the box office success of Shane Black's action film "Iron Man 3" (2013), 20th Century Fox offered the director a budget comparable to that of "Iron Man 3" and proposed that he make a new film in the "Predator" series. Black immediately agreed.
