A bottle washes ashore carrying a message written years earlier, and the note eventually reaches Department Q, the Copenhagen cold-case unit run by Carl Mørck. The plea inside is hard to read and was set down in blood, and when Mørck and his assistant Assad manage to decipher it, the trail points to children who vanished without anyone reporting them missing. Working alongside their secretary Rose, the pair try to identify the sender and work out whether the victims could still be alive while whoever was responsible remains at large.
The film is a Danish, German, Norwegian and Swedish co-production directed by Hans Petter Moland, who took it on between In Order of Disappearance and Cold Pursuit. Nikolaj Arcel and Jussi Adler-Olsen wrote the screenplay, adapting Adler-Olsen's novel, and Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Fares Fares lead the cast as Mørck and Assad, with Pål Sverre Hagen, Jacob Lohmann, Amanda Collin and Johanne Louise Schmidt in supporting roles.
Made for around 5 million dollars, it earned roughly twice that worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from about 25,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 7 out of 10, from a much smaller base of some 626 votes. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from six reviews is in line with those audience scores.
